On this day, in 1603, March 24th, James VI of Scotland, became James I of the United Kingdom. James became the first ruling monarch of the United Kingdom.
Elizabeth I died in England in the early hours of the 24th of March. As Elizabeth had no children, and with no suitable heirs to the throne in England, the crown became accessible to James. James was made King by those in London during the day of the 24th of March. However, at the time, James was in Edinburgh. He didn't go to London until the 5th of April, almost two weeks later.
James united England, Scotland and Ireland, making it one union, one country. He moved from Edinburgh, to London, where his official residence was to become.
This is not the only thing that James was known for. He was also known to fear witches, given rise to the infamous witch hunts in Scotland. It was also under James that the Gunpowder Plot happened, a plot aimed at destroying the royal family. James is often overlooked. We often give attention to other monarchs who have been very influential in British history, such as Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Victoria. James is one of those monarchs who are not given as much attention, but without him, we perhaps wouldn't have had the United Kingdom.
