1. Band Played The band on board the Titanic, did actually play as the ship sank. There are conflicting reports of what the band actually played as the ship sank. The most popular theory is that the band members played Nearer thy God to thee. And, Orpheus in the Underworld. The musicians played the whole time the ship was sinking. Over two hours. 2. 2.20am The ship finally began to completely sink at 2.20am. It first broke into two pieces, before it began to be claimed by the Atlantic Ocean. Today the ship lies in two main parts. Miles apart from each other. 3. Passenger Deaths Most passengers probably did not die of drowning, but, instead hypothermia. It is most likely that those passengers that did end up in the sea, did not live longer than ten minutes. The water was so freezing, that most would not have survived that long. 4. SS California The SS California was right beside the Titanic, in noticeable view. However, due to ice warnings, the California stopped for the night. Just before the Titanic struck the iceberg, the SS California was trying to warn Titanic of the icebergs in the area. The controller of the Titanic wasn't listening. And afterwords, the SS California went to bed for the night. Only five minutes later Titanic struck the iceberg. When Titanic struck the iceberg, one of the ships that it contacted was the SS California did not pick up. The SS California was criticized for not responding. 5. Wreck discovery The wreck of the Titanic was only discovered in 1985. Before 2012, you could take expeditions to go and see the wreck of the Titanic under the ocean. However, this was stopped. The Wreck lies a massive 370 miles below the ocean surface. 6. Length Titanic was massive. Perhaps not as big as cruise ships today, but, the ships was about 3 times as big as a conventional plane. The most accurate height of the Titanic is that of Tower Bridge in London. Both in length and in size. 7. Almost collision The Titanic had, in retrospect, many ill-omens. One was that it almost hit another ship as it was leaving for its Maiden Voyage trip. 8. No cats Another ill-omen for the Titanic was the fact that Titanic had no cats on it. However, there are reports that there was a cat on board the Titanic. However, the cat took her kittens off the ship at Southampton, and never went back on the Titanic. Cats are seen as a symbol of luck on ships. 9. Dogs There was however several dogs on board the Titanic. Two of them were saved as the ship went down. 10. No champagne The Titanic did not have the traditional champagne bottle-breaking. All ships are usually given a bottle-breaking ceremony as a symbol of protection and good luck. Not Titanic.
